a few weeks back i found out i was a finalist for the australian session stylist of the year award...

truly an honour, and such a privilege to be a finalist alongside sarah laidlaw, daren borthwick and lores giglio.

the winner is announced at hair expo in june, just over a month away, but i thought i'd take this opportunity to share the images i submitted... 6 shots from the past year's work that i think represents where i'm at in my career at the moment...

it's been quite a good exercise to reflect on what i do well and what i need to work on to get better at my work.

some girls will, some girls won't, some girls need a lot of loving and a some girls don't...

i don't know why that song just popped into my head, but it did...

troyt coburn is a very talented man. when it comes to making stuff look good, he's one of a kind.

and when the stuff looks good to start with... well that's even better.

michael azzolini frocked the girls up (and the boy) and yolanda made them pretty.

i brushed their hair a bit and then pulled it a bit too.

sweet as bro.

Sat, 10 Mar 2012 15:26:10 -0800 fatty boomsticks (from fit to fat and back again) http://blog.richardkavanagh.com/fatty-boomsticks-from-fit-to-fat-and-back-aga http://blog.richardkavanagh.com/fatty-boomsticks-from-fit-to-fat-and-back-aga
after tearing the ligament off the bone on my my right hand a couple of years ago and spending the best part of a year in a series of casts and post surgery splints (i still have a screw in my hand) i got a little gun-shy when it came to training.

prior to wrecking my hand i was a conscientious trainer, spending the best part of my adult life either training or competing in various combat sports.

i had an average kind of career as a fighter, some spectacular wins, including a welterweight golden gloves title.

and some spectacular losses, including being knocked out in 20 seconds by a giant novice in his first fight.

the main thing for me was that i loved the intensity of the training.

and being fight fit, competing, and surfing regularly for recreation, meant that i kept in pretty good shape as a by-product.

i've also been a very keen experimenter of various dietary fads.

10 years a vegetarian, one year a raw food vegan, amongst other regular fasting and cleansing regimes...

in october 2011 i saw a bunch of pics of myself looking a little on the chubby side. and, although somewhat in a state of denial, i noticed my clothing choices reducing to the fewer and fewer roomier items in my wardrobe...

something snapped. i guess it was the fact that my size 34" pants were becoming too snug to be comfortable, my belt was cutting into my belly when i sat, it was getting uncomfortable to tie my laces and even my large size shirts were becoming a little on the snug side.

i couldn't hide it any more. i'd become a fatty boomsticks. i wasnt proud when i looked in the mirror. in fact, i didn;t want to look in the mirror...

there were more and more 'bits' i was repulsed by on my body.

and i jiggled like mad when i ran..

three weeks before christmas, with the gentle nudging of my wife, i started on a detox called  the clean program  by a new york doctor called allejandro junger.

it's basically a nutritionally dense, low irritant, largely alkaline diet supported with extra fibre, minerals and probiotics.

it's now march and i'm still largely following a clean diet.

it's just so good. i find myself craving a salad with rice and salmon (i was never a salad fan even as a raw foodist) or a smoothie rather than bacon and eggs.

i still love coffee. and sometimes i eat steak pie and lamingtons.

but mostly i eat what's in the pictures here...

best of all, i'm now comfortably back into my 30" waist pants (yay, i'll be able to wear my hussein chalayan pants again!)

and my medium sized shirts are roomy and comfy again.

oh, i also don't jiggle nearly as much.

and i love myself sick when i look in the mirror (ssshhh don't tell anyone ;-))

thanks honey for making me do it...

x

like to many big gigantic curls.

Sat, 18 Feb 2012 05:45:00 -0800 NYFW - NOMIA http://blog.richardkavanagh.com/nyfw-nomia http://blog.richardkavanagh.com/nyfw-nomia
Nomia is a pretty sweet label based in manhattan designed by a young brooklynite.

the lines are clean and graphic and totally wearable.

i wanted to create a really simple graphic look that felt quite androgynous but still made the girls look sophisticated.

with a really strong low side parting and a severe sweep across the forehead, the highly polished look felt like a cross between 40s prepschool boy and elegant hipster.

to add an extra graphic element we added easilengths hair extensions to each of the girls ponytails and then cut the tails blunt and square.

redken rootful, fashion work 12 and glass were essential in creating this look.

Fri, 17 Feb 2012 21:39:00 -0800 NYFW - TRIBUNE STANDARD http://blog.richardkavanagh.com/nyfw-tribune-standard http://blog.richardkavanagh.com/nyfw-tribune-standard
described by harper's bazaar as the new guard at new york fashion week, tribune standard is a fledgling label taking flight.

and this, their 5th showing was a literal interpretation of taking flight.

with pheasant and feather prints in golds and taupe, clothes cut to make women look beautiful, frocks fringed with feather beading, i was tasked the task of creating the hair to top off the look...

my idea was to make it a futuristic olive oyl with references to the 20s and 40s chinoiserie and accessorised with a tortoiseshell hair comb.

my team really had to step it up a gear to make sure each girls face was lifted into catlike beauty with a super tight and polished wet look chignon at the crown.

i needed lots of redken rootful, guts, hardwear gel, and forceful 23 hairspray to make this hair look schmick as.

the big buzz came when tribune standard was asked to ring the closing bell at the new york stock exchange to officially mark the end of new york fashion week.

100,000,000 people watch live on cnbc while tawfik (the designer) and 6 models tolled the bell.

a hundred million!!!!

sheesh

you have to ask yourself the question - what is a turkey doing wandering around downtown manhattan?

here i am in new york for fashion week, fall/winter 12.

just over 2 and a half miles down the east side from where i stay is battery park and the statten island ferry.

it's where you can go see the lady of liberty.

she's pretty big.

and free as a bird.

i think you have to pay to witness her liberty however...

running home from my very free viewing (from a distance) of the statue de la liberte and nearly ran headlong into this guy!

a turkey, roaming freely around the cars.

i also saw some other pretty cool stuff... see?

tomorrow, sunday 12th february, new york.

tribune standard, the label that's making waves as the new guard of fashion at new york fashion week will show.

i'll be putting these little babies in the girls' hair but you'll have to wait and see what else...

the clothes are really truly beautiful.

prints and textures that are so wearable, modern and yet timeless. elegant yet individual and even slightly quirky.

i've got a good feeling about this one.

tawfik is not just a man, he is the man

stay tuned for the looks, the frocks, the coats, the tops, the skirts and the hair...

you simply wouldn't believe how much hair this girl has.

you may remember robyn from the incredibly gorgeous italian vogue cover and editorial featuring 3 plus size models shot by steven meisel. decadent and sexy are the first two words that spring to mind.

and that was what made her perfect for this shoot depicting two sides of the dominatrix.

gianluca wanted her to have two distinct looks, one for in studio and one for on location.

the location hair was marcel waved on a really small iron using redken hot sets 22 before being brushed out and then pinned into a loose bob with flyaways and dirty texture.

when we got into the studio, the hair was gelled back, braided and wrapped up on top of the head in a very 'sound of music' inspired do.

the rope tying was quite something. really... the books that guy had...

nick and carly wanted to make her look effortlessly beautiful and stylish in her knickers while keeping it timelessly fashionable.

her hair was blowdried with redken satinwear 02 to add smothness and shine before being set on a curling iron with new iron shape 11 for shine and control.
